Definition
The workers' union turns a card into a conditional solidarity. A character owes it a voice, a due, a picket; the union can refuse protection, the lawyer, the right to be “us”. The banner is not the plot: the one left alone is.
It administers collective force: votes, funds, shame, negotiations. A scab too visible, a deal too early, a brother on the other side of the picket weigh more than a montage of a march.
Unlike a merchant guild, it does not defend the master's stall. Unlike a megacorp, its stamp is not a badge: it is a card one can withdraw.
What the faction does to the story
- It votes. A strike exists only if the hall says so. A single hero is not enough; a withheld voice closes a life.
- It protects or does not. Card, fund, lawyer: tomorrow you are alone before the boss, and that tomorrow has a name.
- It shames. Traitor, scab, too lukewarm: the collective has a moral police, and someone named pays it.
- It negotiates. What is won at the table can betray what was shouted at the picket; the deal is already a scene.
Structure and levers
| Role | Concrete power | Scene lever |
|---|---|---|
| Delegate / secretary | Agenda, fund, speech | Refuse a card, call / lift a strike |
| Rank-and-file militant | Picket, rumour, voice | Denounce, yield, stay alone |
| Permanent / apparatchik | Network, seats, compromise | Sell a deal, calm too early |
| Boss / foreman | Hiring, lock-out, bonuses | Buy a voice, sack a name |
Anatomy of the faction
| Layer | Concrete detail | Narrative effect |
|---|---|---|
| Card | Due, lawyer, a name struck out | Solidarity has a paper, not only a slogan |
| Vote | Hall, strike, a withheld voice | The collective reads without a unanimous chorus |
| Picket | Shame, scab, a brother opposite | Every family scene is also a line scene |
| Deal | Table, compromise, too early | What is won can betray what was shouted |
Scenes that work
- The refused card: they withdraw protection, the lawyer, the right to be “us”. Nobody argues the banner; the file does it.
- The vote that divides: the hall is not unanimous. A brother, a scab, a lukewarm. The strike exists only if it is said — and someone does not say it.
- The deal too early: the permanent comes back with a paper. The picket was shouting something else. To negotiate is already to choose whom one leaves.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Banner scenery — Counter-example: slogans, flags, a montage of a march — and no card refused. People-as-scenery does not write the union.
- The unanimous people — Counter-example: everyone thinks alike. No faction, a chorus.
- The saintly delegate — Counter-example: a single hero carries everything. The collective did not exist.
- The magical victory — Counter-example: the strike wins with no family cost, no bought voice, no scab. The debt did not exist.
Genre variations
- Historical: strike fund, lock-out, informers.
- Literary: shame, dinner, a brother on the other side of the picket.
- Thriller: a rigged vote, a factory accident, a solidarity that kills.
- SF: a corporation as boss; the card against the badge.
Twists
- The union protects the boss: the deal was the product; the table had already sold the picket.
- The scab was right: the strike was burning the weakest; solidarity had too high a price.
- The refused card saves: staying “us” would have cost a death; leaving was the only protection.

Revision checklist
- Does a character owe a voice, a due, a picket?
- Can the union refuse protection, card, solidarity?
- Does a vote divide the collective in a scene?
- Can an adversary buy a voice?
- Does a scene depend on a card or a picket?
