Definition
The street gang holds a territory with a youth. A favour is never only friendly: a crossing, a look, a roof become a bill. Loyalty is not a street word; it is what stops someone from crossing, going home to their mother, growing up without choosing.
The corner, the block, the bus line: these are scenes of power. Nobody talks “about the crew” on top of the summer. They settle who walks, who pays, who is still of age.
Unlike the family mafia, it does not need a name that outlives funerals: it needs that tonight, here, you do not cross. Unlike the thieves' guild, it has no trade code: it has an age loyalty.
What the faction does to the story
- It bounds. A square, a block, a bus line: the map is a stake.
- It ages badly. Age is a clock; stay, leave, betray.
- It checks loyalty. A friend, a mother, another corner: you cannot serve them in the same scene.
- It survives a death — sometimes. A face falls; the territory looks for a body. Or it empties — and that choice is the plot.
Structure and levers
| Role | Concrete power | Scene lever |
|---|---|---|
| Corner boss | Who walks, who pays, who talks | Forbid a crossing, demand a gesture |
| Lieutenant | Violence, reputation, relay | Hit too early, or too late |
| Youngest | Zeal, look, initiation debt | Say no, or regret it |
| Elder too old | Memory, ridicule, temptation to leave | Remind them last summer is dead |
Anatomy of the faction
| Layer | Concrete detail | Narrative effect |
|---|---|---|
| Corner | Square, block, line, crossing | Geography refuses; hierarchy is readable without an org chart |
| Age | Season, start of term, too old | The clock is not the mafia: it is a summer |
| Loyalty | Friend, mother, other corner | A body cannot be in two places |
| Face | A first name that holds the territory | An anonymous pack is not a faction |
Scenes that work
- The forbidden crossing: a look costs, a young person must choose the street or the mother. Nobody draws a map; everybody counts the corner.
- The initiation too soon: a demanded gesture, a zeal, a no. Accepting is signing; refusing is insulting the age.
- The elder too old: someone reminds them last summer is dead. Loyalty is no longer a word; it is a gesture — leave, or stay one season too many.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Interchangeable teens — Counter-example: “the kids” for six chapters, no corner, no first name. The pack does not write the faction.
- The mafia in costume — Counter-example: table, omertà, don. See the family mafia.
- Decorative violence — Counter-example: shootouts with no geography. Who cannot cross?
- The forgotten clock — Counter-example: no one ages; the gang is eternal. Then it is an institution, not a season.
Genre variations
- Crime: a body on the line; the investigator grew up here.
- Literary: the corner's language colonises the narrator; you no longer know if they are still of age.
- Thriller: a season war; the countdown is the start of term.
- Romance: to love the other corner is to cross; loyalty is the chaperone.
Twists
- The territory protected: the corner was a shelter, not a conquest.
- The boss wants the young to leave: loyalty betrays him by staying.
- There is no corner left: regeneration killed the geography; loyalty remains with no map.

Revision checklist
- Does a named territory open a specific scene?
- Does a young person's loyalty contradict itself?
- Does time (age, season) press?
- Is there a face, not a pack?
- Is it the street, not a family table?
