Definition
The nomadic clan holds its power from mobility. A favour is never only a welcome: fire, bread, a stage become a bill. Hospitality is not trail kindness; it is what stops someone from delivering a guest, staying, leaving someone without it counting.
The camp, the law, the departure: these are scenes of power. Nobody talks “about the journey” on top of the fire. They settle who has a right to water, who is still on the map tomorrow, who breaks camp.
Unlike the closed community, it has no wall: it has a rule of welcome. Unlike smugglers, it does not outwit a post: it is the road.
What the faction does to the story
- It welcomes. Bread, fire, silence: hospitality is a contract, not a kindness.
- It leaves. Breaking camp is a power (escape, deprive, testify elsewhere).
- It leaves behind. The reverse of welcome: a body on the trail.
- It survives a State. They refuse the road; the clan restitches farther on — or settles, and dies as a clan. That choice is the plot.
Structure and levers
| Role | Concrete power | Scene lever |
|---|---|---|
| Camp chief | Where to pitch, whom to welcome, when to leave | Refuse the fire, force the departure |
| Guide / tracker | Oral map, water, enemies of the road | Err, or know too well |
| Keeper of the law | Hospitality, vendetta, shares | Remind them a guest is sacred — or no longer |
| Guest / stranger | Gaze, debt, secret | Force the clan to choose itself |
Anatomy of the faction
| Layer | Concrete detail | Narrative effect |
|---|---|---|
| Hospitality | Fire, bread, silence, who has a right | Welcome has a body, not tent folklore |
| Trail | Stage, water, oral map | Mobility is readable without a wall |
| Departure | Breaking camp, depriving, escaping | Leaving is a power, not tourism |
| Reverse | Leaving on the trail, driving out | Without possible exclusion, hospitality does not oblige |
Scenes that work
- Who has a right to the fire: someone asks for hospitality. Nobody needs a picturesque tent; everybody counts the law.
- Leaving on the trail: a guest, a brother, a secret. Accepting to leave is signing; staying is insulting the road — or saving it.
- Breaking camp tomorrow: a State, a season, a pursuit. Hospitality is no longer a kindness; it is a gesture.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Tent exoticism — Counter-example: colours, music, zero law of welcome. Folklore, no scene where they refuse the fire. Costume does not write the faction.
- People-as-costume — Counter-example: a real ethnonym as disguise. Stick to a lever; do not borrow a people.
- The house in costume — Counter-example: table secret, wall. See the closed community.
- Tourism nomadism — Counter-example: they travel, nothing presses. A State, a season, a pursuit.
Genre variations
- Fantasy: a magical trail; hospitality holds a spell.
- Historical: transhumance, permits, expulsion; the State is the antagonist of the road.
- SF: clan fleet, mobile habitats; breaking camp is a jump.
- Thriller: hiding a witness; leaving is saving them or abandoning them.
Twists
- Hospitality was a trap: they welcome in order to deliver.
- The clan wants to stop: the young refuse the trail; the split is a camp.
- There is no trail left: the border has fenced everything; nomadism becomes a crime of staying.

Revision checklist
- Does a law of hospitality open a specific scene?
- Is leaving a power, not only scenery?
- Can someone be left on the trail?
- Are we on the road, not in a house-secret?
- Does a State, a border, or a season force the camp to move?
