Choosing a character name
A good name is easy to pronounce, stands apart from the other names in the novel and says something about the world. Avoid two major characters starting with the same letter or sharing the same rhythm: readers will mix them up.
Keep names consistent by people or region: shared sounds suggest a shared language. The generator is a starting point; change a letter, drop a syllable, until the name sounds right out loud.
Common questions
- How do I come up with a fantasy character name?
- Start from the sounds of the people: soft and flowing (l, r, long vowels) for an elven people, hard consonants and clusters like "gr" or "ulf" for a Norse one. Generate several options, keep the ones that are easy to say, then adapt them.
- Are the generated names free to use?
- Fantasy and sci-fi names are syllable combinations; modern names are common first names and surnames. Just check a name doesn't match a famous character from another work.
And for the whole novel's consistency?
