A useful sheet, not a directory
A place or faction deserves a sheet when it weighs on the story: it creates an obstacle, hides a secret, changes over the novel. The tool's sections follow that idea: the place's history or the faction's hierarchy serve the plot, not the other way round.
Start with the role in the plot and the secret: those two sections produce scenes. The rest can be written during the first draft.
Places: write with the five senses
The "first impression" section asks what the character smells, hears and touches on arrival. Two or three concrete details are enough to set a place; an exhaustive description slows the story down.
Common questions
- What's the difference between a place sheet and a faction sheet?
- A place sheet describes a space: atmosphere, rules, dangers, change. A faction sheet describes a group that acts: goal, means, methods, limits, weakness. A city can have both: the city as a place, its council as a faction.
- Are my sheets saved?
- No. The sheet is generated in your browser; copy or download it before leaving the page.
