Character age calculator
Enter your characters' birth years and the story's key events: the table gives everyone's age at each point and flags characters who aren't born yet. Works with any calendar, invented ones included ("year 312 of the Ash Era").
| Event | Mara | Orwen (mentor) | Tess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fall of the capital (prologue)302 | 6 yrs | 51 yrs | not born |
| Mara leaves the village314 | 18 yrs | 63 yrs | 5 yrs |
| Battle of the Ford317 | 21 yrs | 66 yrs | 8 yrs |
Events sorted by year. The month (1 to 12) is optional; it refines the age when filled in on both sides.

Why track ages
Age mistakes are among the most common in sagas and novels with flashbacks: a heroine who is "sixteen" in chapter 3 and "nineteen" two months later, a mentor present at a battle that happened before they were born. Careful readers always catch them.
The calculation is simple: event year minus birth year, minus one if the event month comes before the birth month (when both are known). Negative years are accepted for calendars counted before and after a founding event.
Common questions
- How do I keep track of ages in a novel with flashbacks?
- Date every scene, even roughly, then work out the age of the characters present at each date. A table like this one, kept up to date as you write, prevents most inconsistencies.
- Does the calculator work with a fantasy calendar?
- Yes, as long as years are whole numbers on a single scale. If your world has several eras, convert them to one scale first.
And for the whole novel's consistency?
