Definition
Self-publishing (independent publishing) puts the author in charge of the editorial chain: they keep rights, choose vendors (editor, designer, translator), configure distribution platforms, and set price and schedule. This model differs radically from Vanity publishing (vanity), where the author pays a structure to produce the book without real editorial selection, and from Traditional publishing (traditional), where the house takes financial risk. In France, digital self-publishing mainly goes through Amazon KDP, Kobo Writing Life, Apple Books, and approved distributors. EPUB / MOBI formats and Book design / typesetting become skills to learn or outsource.
What it's for
Self-publishing offers freedom and speed: publish a series at pace, test a genre, keep high digital margins, reach niches ignored by major houses (French romance, francophone fantasy, regional crime). For authors with an existing audience (newsletter, social), it's often the shortest path from finished manuscript to readers. It also demands total rigor: mediocre self-published work (amateur cover, typos, broken EPUB TOC) damages the whole catalog. ROI depends on marketing: without visibility, theoretical margins stay at zero. Preparing a manuscript for KDP — structure, metadata, BISAC categories — is part of the job.
Variants by genre
- Romance / fantasy series: fast per-volume release, reader loyalty, promo pricing; keep visual series consistency (covers, typography).
- Crime / thriller: fierce competition; editing and cover hook are decisive; Amazon FR/EN categories must be targeted.
- Literary / essay: self-publishing possible but physical reach limited without distributor; digital and indie bookstores via POD remain niches.
- Print on demand (POD): Amazon KDP Print, BoD — no stock, lower margins, check paper quality on proof.
- Hybrid: self-published author engaging a distributor for bookstores — advanced model, read contracts carefully.
Common pitfalls
- Under-investing in editing and cover: readers don't forgive amateur signals; Beta reading and a pro editor are non-negotiable.
- Confusing self-publishing and vanity: paying "to be published" isn't self-publishing; see Vanity publishing.
- Bad economics: Facebook ads + cover + editing > revenue on 200 sales — model before launch.
- Neglected metadata: wrong category, generic keywords, flat blurb — the book is invisible.
- Broken EPUB: missing clickable TOC, bad hyphenation, unreadable font on e-reader — one-star reviews guaranteed.
- Missing legal deposit and ISBN: in France, BnF deposit is mandatory; ISBN via AFNIL or purchase — plan ahead.
Examples
- Hugh Howey — Wool: US self-publishing success, later traditional deal; quality and word-of-mouth preceded the contract.
- Aurélie Wellenstein — French romance independent path: series, visual identity, direct reader link.
- Andy Weir — The Martian: initial Amazon self-publishing, then Crown; manuscript already honed by online readers.
- Typical KDP author: proofread manuscript, simulated Editorial reading committee upstream, pro cover, EPUB validated on Kindle and Kobo — checklist before Amazon.fr launch.
Writing tips
- Budget 800 to 2,500 € before publishing: pro copy-edit (200-800€), cover (150-600€), interior design (100-400€), ISBN, proofs. Skip a line and you publish amateur.
- Prepare a 90-day launch plan: 30 days pre-order, 30 days release, 30 days maintenance. Without a plan, sales collapse by D+7.
- Gather 15-25 verified reviews in the first week via ARCs (Advance Reader Copies): that's the algorithmic credibility threshold on Amazon.
- Keep your source files (DOCX + InDesign/Vellum) versioned: reissuing in 2 years without sources costs a full re-layout.

Revision checklist
- Do Vanity publishing and this notion reinforce each other, or does one contradict the other?
- Could a beta reader name Self-publishing after reading without being told?
- Am I keeping a scene out of attachment that doesn't illustrate this notion?
- Did my last pass fix structure before style (see Line editing / polishing if needed)?
- Does the climax or pivot scene clearly show what Self-publishing changes in the story?
